WHAT IS COACHING AND HOW CAN IT BENEFIT ME?

The Association for Coaching definition of personal coaching is: “A collaborative solution-focused, results-orientated and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth of the coachee.”

From this definition, I highlight “collaborative” as I see coaching as a unique partnership between two people, me (the coach) and you (the client) and ” solution-focused, results-orientated” as I am a firm believer in encouraging you to take massive action in order to achieve results.

COACHING VS MENTORING

Carol Wilson, Managing Director of Culture at Work, explanation of the differences between Coaching & Mentoring and how it’s possible to combine both resonated with me and my approach.

Coaching

“Coaches work on improving the performance and wellbeing of an individual or group through setting goals, exploring values and beliefs, and creating plans of action. This is achieved not by advising or telling but largely by questioning to facilitate awareness and self-directed learning.”

Mentoring

“I would define Mentors as people who impart their own experience, learning and advice to those who have less experience in a particular field. In modern business, the practice of delivering mentoring in a coaching style is increasing.

The term originates in ancient Greece, with Homer’s classic poem, ‘The Odyssey’, in which Odysseus appoints a guardian called Mentor to look after his son in his absence, as a teacher, guide and friend.”

COACH VS THERAPIST

Although coaches and therapists occasionally might help clients with similar problems, their work is not the same.

Therapists and counsellors are required to hold a degree (a Master’s or a Doctorate) and are trained to diagnose and treat people with mental health issues such as chronic anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

Coaches help their clients with their journey from where they are to where they want to go. The Coach is a trusted partner that guides the client through a “thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership”. (ICF). Learn more.
