When we get to stage three in our spiritual evolution (check our spiritual journey main page for more details), we start to have a lot of questions and may feel the need to discover our true purpose in this life. We come to understand that we’re not a body with a soul but a soul using our body as a vehicle.
Our spiritual awakening occurs when we question our beliefs and our vision in life. This might emerge from a feeling of worthlessness and being just another cog in society’s machine or after the death of a loved one, when a tragedy or trauma occurs or during a worldwide crisis like the one we’re living through now with COVID-19.
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to awakening, not everyone will have or choose to take this journey. Each one of us is free to decide our path and some decide and are happy to live their lives in stage three – where they have careers, family, social norms and material desires.
While others may want to create deeply meaningful, spiritual and fulfilling lives and find their true purpose and calling. Something wakes them up and they realise they have a choice and numerous possibilities.
Everyone’s spiritual journey is different and unique and it is never completed. We’re continuously learning and growing.
My spiritual awakening is very recent and related to COVID-19. Today I know why I’m here in this lifetime and I live my life with a purpose and a mission.
But that wasn’t always the case. Like most people, I have a 9 to 5 job and lived a busy life with no time to pause and reflect. When COVID hit, I observed those around me and felt their pain and despair, and realized that I’m able to help them.
COVID forced me to stop and develop self-awareness. I started to look inside myself for the answers to my existential questions. I delved into research and educated myself about spirituality, compassion, how to be a better human being and what tools are available to help me on this journey.
If you feel like you have a calling and want to be awakened so you can embark on a spiritual journey; I hope the tips below will help you start. It’s the reason why I wrote this article – to help you and bring light into your life.
At the beginning of your spiritual awakening
- Ask yourself why
Before starting this journey think carefully why you want to do it. There are several questions to ask yourself including; do you want to find something, release something or both? or find your life’s purpose? maybe you want to experience enlightenment? or discover your true self? Keep in mind that there’re many reasons why we choose to start a spiritual journey and these will evolve throughout the journey.
- Learn about spiritual practices
Once you’ve unfolded your why, immerse yourself in research and learn about spiritual philosophies, ideas and practices. Make sure to pay attention to those that intrigue you and speak to your soul. This research involves reading books, watching YouTube videos, listening to workshops and webinars, joining specific groups, to mention a few. This journey is a quest that requires your heart and soul, and should give you peace, pleasure and joy. Embrace it and have fun!
- Immerse yourself in the spiritual experience
Now that you’ve dabbled in different practices and ideas, it’s time to discover the ones that call and speak to your heart and soul. Tune into yourself and uncover what speaks to you on a profound level. What makes your soul glow? What benefits you the most and brings you peace?
Commit and dive deep into the experiences and don’t worry if you discover later that it’s not for you as there’s always time to change course. What’s important is to go deeper and discover the truths and wisdom of your soul.
- Register your learnings and experiences
Immersing yourself in spiritual practices will unlock amazing and memorable experiences, feelings and sensations. One easy way of absorbing them into your being is through journaling. I suggest you write all your experiences, thoughts, feelings and ideas throughout the journey in your journal so you can refer back to it in the future. If you don’t like journaling you can use audio or video, create pieces of art, compose music or even create a daily blog.
- Incorporate spirituality into your daily life
As with everything in life, you need practice and consistency to reap all the blessings and it is the same with your spiritual awakening. It’s always exciting to learn something new but it takes courage and commitment to integrate it into your daily life and make it a living and breathing part of you.
You can’t rush or force this process as it’s the natural progression of the heart, soul, and spiritual maturity. There are several tools and techniques you can use to incorporate spirituality into your daily life including:
- Meditation
- Self-care
- Mindfulness
- Shadow work
- Inner child work
- Hypnosis
Select the tool(s) that effectively helps you to connect to your soul, to slow down, go inwards and be introspective. It’s a magical experience that’ll help you truly live and express self-love, compassion, kindness, presence and wisdom. It’ll help you unveil your true self.
Always remember that to live fully and enjoy the benefits of your spiritual journey, you must believe, be sincere, and dedicate your heart and soul to this path.
